Dhaka, May 7: Bangladesh ranks fifth among all countries in the world in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, Bangladesh ranks highest among the South Asian countries. This information came up in the ‘Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index’ published by Japan-based Nikkei Asia on Thursday (May 6).

From the onset of the coronavirus pandemic until April 30 this year, more than a hundred countries around the world tackled Covid-19, according to the Nikkei Asia Index. Qatar tops the recovery index out of 121 countries in the world.

Second, third and fourth on the list are the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Cambodia and Rwanda, respectively. Bangladesh is in the fifth position in the list.

Nikkei Asia says the country and region has been assessed in its Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index based on corona infection management, anti-virus vaccination and related social activities. The higher a country's position in the index, the better the country's position against Covid-19.

Countries in the top rankings have lower infection rates and mortality rates than others and better immunization conditions. Qatar is at the top of the index with 87 points considering these issues. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is in second place with the same number of points.

In addition, Cambodia and Rwanda are in the third and fourth position with 83.5 and 82.5 points respectively.

On the other hand, Bangladesh is in the fifth position in the index with 80 points. This position of Bangladesh is also the highest among these countries of South Asia. However, Nepal is in the sixth position after Bangladesh.

The country ranks second in South Asia with 79 points. The other four countries in the top ten are Dominican Republic, Chile, Kuwait and El Salvador. Their points are 78, 76, 76 and 74 respectively.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is in the third position among the South Asian countries. However, the country, which is ranked 23rd globally, has 70 points. Peru is joint 23rd with Pakistan with the same point. Besides, Sri Lanka is in the 31st position in the index with 68 points.

Bangladesh's other neighbor Myanmar is at number 62 with 63 points. Besides, another South Asian country, India is in the 70th position. The two Caribbean countries, along with Haiti, have a score of 62.5. Besides, Afghanistan is at number 117 in the list with 44 points.
