Dhaka, October 4, 2020: Retired Major Sinha Mohammad was shot dead by police at a check post in Cox's Bazar. After the death of Rashed Khan, the incident of killing in a gunfight came to a halt.

In the seven months from January to July, 174 people were killed in gun battles; Where more than 20 people have lost their lives every month, only one has died in the next two months, August-September.

The change comes after Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan, a retired army officer, was shot dead at a police checkpoint in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, on July 31.

Regarding the sudden cessation of gunfights, a former IGP of the police said that at various times, various people went to the law enforcement officers and asked them to kill the terrorists in a gunfight, but no one stood by when the police were in danger. He is of the opinion that the law enforcement has realized that gunfight is not good from this.

The deaths of militants, terrorists and drug traffickers in Bangladesh have been going on for many years. Although domestic and foreign human rights organizations have expressed concern about this, law enforcement has always said that they are not in favor of extrajudicial killings, they only shoot when attacked.

In a similar incident, retired Major Sinha was shot dead by police at the Shamlapur check post in Baharchhara Union of Cox's Bazar on the night before Eid-ul-Adha on July 31. He went to Cox's Bazar with two companions to make a travel documentary.

Cox's Bazar police said at the time that Sinha had "prevented a search" with his identity. He was later shot dead by police on duty at a checkpoint. But when questions were raised about the details of the incident provided by the police, the Home Ministry formed a high-level inquiry committee on August 2. Allegations of "extrajudicial killings" against the police have also resurfaced.

Only after that incident, in early August, a man was killed in a so-called 'gunfight' with the police in Zakiganj, Sylhet. Then in the last two months, the 'gun war' has come down to zero.
