Bangladesh IGP meets UN police chief

Dhaka, September 3: Bangladesh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Benazir Ahmed held a meeting with United Nations Police Chief Luis Carrilho. Various issues of mutual interest were discussed in this bilateral meeting.

The meeting was held at the United Nations headquarters on Friday (September 2) local time. At this time, UN Police Chief praised the Bangladesh Police Force's contribution in UN peacekeeping operations, highlighting their professionalism and dedication.

The UN police chief noted the high professionalism and sense of responsibility he saw in Bangladesh policemen while serving as police commissioner in East Timor and Haiti. Besides, he also highlighted the professionalism of Bangladeshi policemen working in UN Peacekeeping Mission Mali and DR Congo.

Bangladesh has been deploying women policemen in peacekeeping operations, which is an important step in women's empowerment and establishing gender equality, the UN police chief said.

In the meeting, IGP Benazir Ahmed said that Bangladesh Police is always ready to respond to any need of UN peacekeeping operations. The IGP requested the deployment of skilled and professional specialized units of the Bangladesh Police, especially in the management of dangerous peacekeeping operations in Africa. In this regard, he talked about the deployment of various specialized units including SWAT, canine, riverine, guard police and forensic units.

Benazir Ahmed also highlighted the capacity of Bangladesh in organizing various programs and training for UN Police. He requested the appointment of high-ranking Bangladeshi police officers at the UN headquarters and at the field level of peacekeeping operations.

The IGP highlighted the significant contribution of Bangladesh Police in implementation of SDGs, climate change, empowerment of women, establishment of human rights and rule of law under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The meeting also discussed the supply of necessary equipment from the Bangladesh Police Force for the peacekeeping mission.
