Dhaka, May 20: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that after forty years of struggle Bangladesh has become a developing country. She was speaking at the Independence Award ceremony held at the Prime Minister's official residence Ganobhaban on Thursday. Through today's ceremony, the Independence Medal was handed over to 9 individuals and one organisation in recognition of their glorious and meritorious contribution at the national level.

Sheikh Hasina said, "Bangladesh has now been established as a developing country from a least developed country. We got this recognition on the occasion of our 50th anniversary. We got this recognition while celebrating the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation. We want to move forward."

He said, "I think if those who fought with arms in the name of the father of the nation did not show that courage that day, would we have got freedom? Maybe everything would have failed. However, many times after August 15, 1975 to defeat our liberation war." Efforts have been made. The name of the father of the nation has been erased from history ... even from the songs of the liberation war, where Bangabandhu's name is mentioned or our independence is mentioned."

The Prime Minister said, "I do not know how an independent nation or a citizen of an independent country, who liberated the country by waging a war of liberation, can trample on the defeated forces again. I cannot even think of that. But in that situation Bangladesh was taken away, which was always an effort of ours ... we are an independent nation, we have won the war of liberation. So we will always keep our heads high in the world court, do not reach out to anyone, do not beg for mercy."
