Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 4: Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said Bangladesh is willing to work closely with the United States to find ways and means to lift sanctions on RAB and its officials on a priority basis.

He also sought the support of the US Congress during a meeting with two members of Congress during his visit to New York from February 23 to March 2 to attend the official meeting of the United Nations, according to a press release issued on Thursday.

Grace Meng, a member of Congress, and James P. McGovern, a co-chair of the Human Rights Commission and a member of Congress, held a virtual meeting with the Foreign Minister on February 28 and March 1, respectively.

Expressing concern over the recent US sanctions on RAB and its seven current and former senior officials, Foreign Minister Dr. Momen told US lawmakers that Bangladesh was ready to refute specific allegations against RAB members. He said that in recent years, RAB has emerged as one of the most competent and effective law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh in combating terrorism, violent extremism, drug and human trafficking and other crimes.

Dr. Momen also briefed about the extensive socio-economic development of Bangladesh under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. At the time, the two legislators lauded the outstanding development of Bangladesh under the leadership of the Prime Minister. The Foreign Minister also recalled with gratitude the strong humanitarian and political support of the United States to Bangladesh in the Rohingya crisis and the sending of the covid vaccine.

He called on US lawmakers to use all possible means to put pressure on Myanmar to create a safe and secure environment in the Rakhine state and to repatriate the Rohingyas who have been forcibly displaced in Bangladesh. Appreciating Bangladesh's generosity in sheltering this large number of Rohingya, US lawmakers said they will continue their efforts in this regard.
