Bangladesh pledges to contribute to all UN Police initiatives

Dhaka, September 2: As a proud member of the United Nations Police (UNPOL), Bangladesh reiterated its commitment to contribute to any initiative for sustainable peace and development. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan reiterated this pledge in a meeting organized on the occasion of the UN Police Chiefs' Conference at the General Assembly of the United Nations Headquarters on Thursday (September 1) local time in New York.

The Home Minister said that the United Nations peacekeeping operations should be advanced through a balanced and coherent approach to maintain peace and security to facilitate development activities. Identifying the root causes of the fragility of conflict-affected countries, the Interior Minister urged the United Nations to provide assistance to the countries in providing basic services, creating economic opportunities and increasing the government capacity of the countries in implementing the necessary administrative reforms.

He said there is a need for a coherent and integrated management between all concerned, including the UN Police, UN country teams and agencies and national authorities.

The Home Minister emphasized the role of UN policing in security sector reforms and strengthening the rule of law and Special Police Teams (SPTs) as per the mandate. The Home Minister appreciated the efforts of deploying more women police officers at the field level in UN peacekeeping and increasing the number of women police officers in senior positions. He mentioned the readiness of Bangladesh Police to contribute efficient women police officers and well-equipped police units to advance this goal.

The Home Minister stressed on the use of renewable energy and natural fiber based products to reduce environmental risks in peacekeeping operations. He said, this step can play a positive role for sustainable development in countries where peacekeepers are deployed.

The Minister of Home Affairs mentioned that Bangladesh leads a group of friends with Italy, who are working to reduce the negative aspects of the environment through the implementation of the United Nations Environmental Strategy.

The Home Minister was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith and the Inspector General of Bangladesh Police, Benazir Ahmed, in this event organized on the occasion of the meeting of police chiefs.
