Dhaka, July 20: Another 3 million doses of Moderna coronavirus vaccine have arrived at Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport through the COVAX facility. The vaccines arrived on a Qatar Airways cargo plane around 9 pm on Monday.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and Health Minister Zahid Maleque received the vaccines at the airport, Dr. Shahriar Sajjad, Assistant Director, Directorate General of Health Services at the Shahjalal Airport said.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh has received 5.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine from the United States till date. More vaccines are expected to arrive from the country in July.

Officials from the US Embassy in Dhaka and senior officials from Bangladesh's Ministry of Health and Foreign Affairs were present at the airport to receive the vaccine.

Earlier on Saturday (July 17), Earl Miller, the US ambassador to Bangladesh, took to Twitter to make the announcement pertaining to the vaccine doses.

"Pleased to announce another gift of 3 million doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine coming to Flag of Bangladesh from the American people via #COVAX. The U.S. is committed to increasing the country’s vaccine supply to beat the pandemic here and worldwide," Miller's tweet read.

This Moderna vaccine dose is part of the US government's recent allocation of 25 million vaccine doses for Asian countries after President Joe Biden promised to share the dose of US jabs with either COVAX or other countries directly around the world.

Vaccines are being supplied to poor countries through the COVAX program to prevent the pandemic. The US government sent 2.5 Moderna vaccine doses to Bangladesh on July 2 and 3 under COVAX.
