In the next two to three years, there will be a revolutionary change in the road network of Bangladesh.

Building a safe and travel-friendly road network is a priority of the government. The legal framework has been strengthened to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target of reducing road accidents by 50 per cent and the Decade of Action for Road Safety for the second time. The Department of Road Transport and Highways is implementing the National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan in coordination with international and domestic legal frameworks.

Obaidul Quader, Minister for Road Transport and Bridges and General Secretary of Awami League, said this at a virtual discussion meeting titled 'Road Safety Collaboration, Reducing Road Fatalities Fifty Percent by Twenty Thirty' on the occasion of Safe Roads Day.

Obaidul Quader joined the discussion through a video conference from his official residence at a discussion jointly organized by BRAC and the World Bank. Noting that female drivers are more careful and respectful of the law than male drivers, the Road Transport Minister said the government is increasing the chances of producing female drivers. BRAC was the first to start the process of making women drivers. Women are more careful than men in driving and respect traffic laws. So the government wants to increase the number of women drivers.

Welcoming the joint venture of BRAC and the World Bank at the private level with the aim of halving the fatality rate of road accidents, he said it would be easier to achieve any goal in these sectors if the government as well as the private sector were involved. Building a safe and travel-friendly road network is a priority of the government.

Referring to the next generation, not the next election in the thoughts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the General Secretary of the Awami League said, Sheikh Hasina's dream is to build a prosperous and developed Bangladesh. His concern is the protection of the country and the people. A hundred-year delta plan has been formulated for what Bangladesh will be like after one hundred years. This is the specialty under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. His vision is in the distance of the forest.
