Bangladesh suffers a loss of Rs 1.8 lakh crore in 6 years due to climate disaster

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 30: Bangladesh is one of the countries most at risk from the effects of climate change.

Apart from climate change, Bangladesh faces many more natural crises.

In the last six years (2015-20), due to the climate change, Bangladesh has suffered a damage of its resources equivalent to one lakh 79 thousand 198 crore rupees which is 1.32 percent of the country's total GDP.

The information has come up in the report 'Bangladesh Environmental Statistics-2020' published by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The report was released at the NEC conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Tuesday (March 29). Minister for Planning MA Mannan, State Minister for Planning Prof Dr. Shamsul Alam, Disaster and Relief Secretary Md. Kamrul Hasan were present on the occasion. Dr. Shahnaz Arefin, Secretary, Department of Statistics and Information Management presided over the function. Md. Rafiqul Islam, Director, Environment, Climate Change and Disaster Strengthening (ECDS) Project, gave a detailed presentation on the publication.

One of the most important results of the survey was to calculate the damage caused by natural disasters. During the period of 2015-20, in six years, due to natural disasters, the financial loss was one lakh 79 thousand 198 crore rupees. Of these, 28.90 percent were lost in crops, 3.98 percent in livestock, 1.51 percent in poultry and 3.71 percent in fisheries.

In addition, land degradation is causing huge losses to the sector every year. The houses, kitchens, barns, infrastructure, etc. have suffered 7.38 percent damage and yard-based plants including food-based social forests 1.96 percent. Out of this, only large agricultural sectors (grains, livestock, poultry, fisheries, forests) have suffered a total loss of Rs 71,783 crore.

Among the natural calamities, the loss due to floods is 10,108 crore rupees. Two thousand 68 crore rupees have been lost due to river erosion and 2,055 crore rupees due to cyclone. In the last six years, the family-based loss due to climate has been Rs 1,882 crore.
