Dhaka, March 24: The Government of Bangladesh has expressed its deep gratitude to the Government of India for its decision to award the Gandhi Peace Prize 2020 to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bangabandhu was given the posthumous award for the first time.

"This prestigious award is a great honor for Bangladesh and its people," a press release said on Tuesday.

It further said that this honor carries special significance on the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence. Especially when Bangladesh is going to become a developing country through politics, economy and social change, which Bangabandhu laid the foundation for.

The award is also an honor to the ever-deepening relationship between Bangladesh and India.

The decision was taken at a time when the two countries are jointly celebrating the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the centenary of Bangabandhu's birth.

The statement said, "On the occasion of the centenary of Bangabandhu's birth, while Bangladesh is highlighting the important events of his life, this award recognizes his lifelong struggle to ensure the freedom and rights of the people of this country and build a world free from hunger, poverty and exploitation."

It was further said that on this occasion, the people of Bangladesh paid homage to the two great leaders Bapuji and Bangabandhu. Whose values and ideals are still a source of inspiration to build a peaceful, exploitation, injustice and deprivation free world.
