Dhaka, August 6: Bangladesh is buying 7.5 crore coronavirus vaccine from China. Meanwhile, the cost of 1.5 crore vaccine has already been paid, said Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen. He made the remarks while addressing reporters at the state guest house Padma on Thursday (August 5).

"We have ordered 75 million doses of the vaccine from Sinopharm. We have already paid for 15 million doses," the Foreign Minister said.

"We will get 4.4 million doses of vaccine through the COVAX facility this month. Sinopharm will send 3.4 million doses next week. A million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will also arrive in August, and we will receive six million doses of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines next month," Dr Momen told reporters.

He said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) could be signed with China pertaining to joint vaccine production anytime soon.

On May 12, Bangladesh received the first shipment of China's Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine as gift.

On May 19, the government approved the direct purchase of the Sinopharm vaccine.

Over time, the vaccines- both the ones as gift and bought- reached Dhaka in multiple shipments. The government has started a mass immunization program in the country with these vaccines.

Earlier on May 8, the World Health Organization approved the emergency use of the Sinopharm vaccine, following which Bangladesh gave its nod.
