Dhaka, November 13: For the first time in the country, the government has approved the setting up of a center for power generation from waste. The construction work will be carried out by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) at Amin Bazar area of Dhaka North City Corporation. The construction of the 42.5 MW power plant will cost Tk 15,325.43 crore.

The power plant was approved at a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Thursday (November 12th).

Later, Additional Secretary to the Cabinet Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal briefed reporters about the meeting online.

He said, "For the first time in the country, the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement has approved the purchase proposal for setting up a power plant with waste."

"A power project will be set up in Amin Bazar area of Dhaka North City Corporation with a capacity of 42.5 MW for a period of 25 years. The project will be implemented by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BUBO) under the Power Department. It will cost Tk 15,325.43 crore."

The additional secretary added, "China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), a Chinese company, has got the job."

"It is a waste incineration plant. We will get electricity from there. This is a new type of system in the country where waste will be burned to generate electricity. The price per kilowatt will be Tk 18.295."

Later, a press release from the local government department said that CMEC will implement the project within the next 20 months.

The term of the contract is 25 years. The sponsoring company will bear the cost of setting up, operating and maintaining the plant at its own risk and sell the generated power to the power department. The City Corporation will provide the necessary land resources and regular waste for setting up the plant.

Note that the main advantage of generating electricity from waste in the incineration process is that if this plant is commissioned, it will have to supply 3,000 metric tons of waste per day.

If this amount of waste is not supplied, the Northern City Corporation will have to compensate the sponsoring company at the rate of Tk 1,000 per tonne of deficit waste.

As three thousand tons of waste will be required every day, it is informed in the notification that if the mentioned amount of waste is to be collected, there will be no more garbage.
