Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 14 August 2023: Tomorrow 15 August is National Day of Mourning. The 48th martyrdom anniversary of the architect of freedom, the commander-in-chief of the liberation war, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Bengali nation irrespective of caste, religion and caste will observe the day with deep respect. Various political parties and socio-cultural organizations including Awami League have taken detailed programs on the occasion of the day.

The program includes - Half-masting of national and party flags and hoisting of black flags at Bangabandhu Bhavan and Central Offices at all levels of organizations across the country during the sunrise. Wreath-laying of Bangabandhu's portrait at Bangabandhu Bhavan premises in Dhanmondi, the historical memorial of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Tributes to the martyrs of 15th August at Banani Cemetery, shrine visit, Fateha reading, prayer and Milad mahfil and at Tungipara Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's tomb, Fateha reading, Milad and Doa mahfil and discussion meeting.

On the early night of August 15, 1975, some misguided members of the army killed Bangabandhu and his family at his residence in Dhanmondi. The assassins not only killed Bangabandhu, Bangabandhu's wife Bangmata Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib, Bangabandhu's children Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and child Sheikh Russell, along with daughter-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosi Jamal, lost their lives one by one.

Bangabandhu's brother Sheikh Nasser, brother-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat and his sons Arif and Sukantababu, daughter Baby, Bangabandhu's nephew and the organizer of the Liberation War Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, his pregnant wife Arju Moni and Abdul Naeem Khan Rintu and Colonel Jamil could not escape from this world's worst murder. Sixteen members and relatives were assassinated.

At that time, Bangabandhu's two daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, lived as they were abroad.

Basically, from August 15, 1975, a journey of opposite trend started in Bangladesh. The lawless history of military rule overthrew the civilian government. After the killing of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu in his family, the entire world fell into a shadow of intense grief and spread the venom of hatred. West German leader Willy Branditt, who won the Nobel Prize after Bangabandhu's murder, said that Bengalis can no longer be trusted after Mujib's murder. A Bengali who can kill Sheikh Mujib can do any heinous act.

Nirad C Chowdhury, a British citizen of Indian origin and a prominent writer, described the Bengalis as 'traitors' and said that by killing the visionary of the Bengali nation, Sheikh Mujib, the Bengali nation has shown its suicidal character to the people of the world.
