Dhaka, June 26: The United States of America will be donating 25 lakh doses of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine to Bangladesh through the COVAX program. The vaccines will be available in the next seven to 10 days, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said on Friday (June 25).

"Bangladesh sent a letter to COVAX last June to get the vaccine. As such, we are to be given about seven crore vaccines in phases. We received a letter on Friday, which said they will give us 25 lakh Moderna vaccines," the Health Minister said.

The minister added, "We have to take the vaccine in the next seven to 10 days. They asked us to take necessary actions and send a letter of consent for vaccination. We am sending it."

Pfizer's vaccine comes from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), an international platform designed to ensure immunization in poor countries. Gavie, who has been instrumental in protecting the lives of children in poor countries from deadly and contagious diseases, has taken the initiative to provide coronavirus vaccines to 92 low- and middle-income countries around the world. The international platform COVAX has been set up to ensure that poor countries receive vaccinations.

Earlier, on May 31, 1,00,602 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine reached the country through COVAX.

Meanwhile, when asked about the Chinese vaccine shipment, he said, "We hope to receive a shipment in a few days. However, we are not sure how much they will send."
