Dhaka, September 13: Noting that there is no shortage of coronavirus vaccines in Bangladesh at the moment, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said that 54 lakh vaccines had arrived earlier this month (September). In the rest of the month, another 1.5 crore vaccines will come to the country. He was speaking as the chief guest at the 'Joining and Orientation Program for Newly Appointed Physicians as Junior Consultant (Anesthesiology)' at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Nawab Abdul Gani Road in the capital on Sunday (September 12) at noon.

"We have received schedule to get vaccine doses every week. Fifty lakh vaccines are coming from China on Saturday morning. There are four schedules in four weeks this month. In this way the activities will continue as per the schedule," Maleque had said while visiting the government-run Titumir College in Mohakhali on Friday (September 10) to inspect the dental admission test.

On Sunday, the health minister highlighted the contribution of the present government, especially Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in tackling the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the importance of keeping it under control and keeping the country's economy afloat and opening schools and colleges.

He said the appointment of 409 anesthesia doctors in the sixth grade at the same time was a landmark event considering the Covid-19 pandemic. There is a great need for anesthesia doctors in hospitals in remote areas of the country. There were only 30 doctors working in this post as against 608 previously approved posts.

"Last year we promoted 169 doctors. As there were no suitable candidates at that time, it was not possible to promote the remaining 409 posts," he said.

The minister said a notification was issued on September 5 after a request was made to the Bangladesh Public Service Commission to fill 409 vacancies on July 7. "The health sector will be grateful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for appointing such a large number of doctors in such a short period of time, despite some irregularities."
