Bangladesh trying to maintain balance in Ukraine-Russia war diplomacy

Dhaka, March 26, 2022: Bangladesh has adopted a balanced foreign policy in the Russia-Ukraine war.

On the one hand, Dhaka did not vote in the UN resolution on 'aggression in Ukraine' on March 2. On the other hand, Dhaka is maintaining a balanced policy with both sides by voting in favor of the resolution on March 24 on the humanitarian consequences of the aggression in Ukraine.

Former Foreign Secretary. Shahidul Haque said, "Foreign policy is always dynamic. The decision to abstain from voting on March 2 has been reviewed at a later date, he said. That is why a balanced position has been taken as the resolution of March 24 is in line with the policy of Bangladesh. Different decisions in both resolutions have greatly reduced the likelihood of Russia or the Western world being offended. However, the government should explain the reason for Bangladesh's decision.

In a press conference on March 24, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantitsky expressed his gratitude to Bangladesh for abstaining from voting in the March 2 UN resolution. Regarding the "aggression in Ukraine" resolution of March 2, the former foreign secretary said that the words of that resolution were very strong and completely political. Maybe that's why the government abstained. But the March 24 resolution mentions a humanitarian catastrophe as well as what caused it. That means the next resolution has both humanitarian and political elements.
