Dhaka, September 13: Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has sought Russia's help in repatriating a large number of Rohingya people who have lost their homeland in Myanmar and is living as refugees in Bangladesh for more than four years.

The appeal was made during Momen's meeting with Aleksandr Mantytsky, Russia's newly appointed ambassador to Dhaka, at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday (September 12). Momen also welcomed the new Russian Ambassador to Dhaka.

Highlighting various aspects of Dhaka-Moscow special relations during the meeting, Dr. Momen said Bangladesh gratefully remembers Russia's contribution in the great liberation war of 1971 and post-independence reconstruction of the country.

The Foreign Minister further said that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman visited Russia in March 1972 at the invitation of the then President of Soviet Russia after independence. He expressed special gratitude to the Russian government and people for their cooperation in the liberation war of Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Dr. Momen said that if the Russian Ambassador reiterated his interest in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dhaka-Moscow diplomatic relations, both countries could host the event.

The Foreign Minister hoped that the Russian Foreign Minister would be present at the inauguration of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in 2023.
