Dhaka, March 31: In the year 2022, about 19 percent of the total food, i.e. more than 100 crore tons of food was wasted at home, food service and retail level. At that time, an average person in Bangladesh wasted 82 kg of food per year, BBC News reported this quoting a report by the United Nations Environment Program or UNEP.

According to the report, most of the world's food is wasted at home. As much as 60 percent of the food waste happened in households. Also, an average person wastes 79 kg of food per year. According to the information found in the report titled Food Waste Index Report 2024, Bangladesh's food waste trend at that time was higher than India, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States.

According to the United Nations, an average person in a household wastes 55 kg of food annually in India, 76 in the UK, 73 in the US and 33 in Russia. However, the highest amount of food was wasted in the Maldives. There was 207 kg and the lowest was in Mongolia which was 18 kg.

Researchers claim that the highest income families in Bangladesh waste more food. Analyzing with the previous report of UNEP, it can be seen that the trend of food wastage or spoilage of food ingredients or prepared food has increased in 2022. Based on a 2019 study, the agency's 2021 report said that a Bangladeshi person wastes 65 kg of food ingredients or processed food annually.

Researchers say that the main causes of food wastage at home and in restaurants are cooking more than necessary, buying extra food and not using it and not storing food properly.
