Dhaka, March 25: Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has said that Bangladesh will become the fifth Asian Tiger within five years if the Awami League stays in power for another five-year term. He made the remarks in response to a question from reporters after a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic and Public Procurement, chaired by him, on Wednesday (March 24).

Kamal said, "Congratulations and best wishes on the occasion of our Independence Day and the Golden Jubilee of Independence. We hope that the coming days and Independence Days will be brighter. The people of Bangladesh will have a stronger place on the world map. We are proud of that."

Regarding the achievements of Bangladesh in the last 50 years in the economic and social indicators, Mustafa Kamal said, "We have achieved a lot in every field of economic and social indicators. When the Awami League came to power, I was interested to know the position of all countries in the world. At that time Bangladesh was at number 80."

"Experts review different countries and express their opinions. They consider the top 50 countries. Since we weren't in the top 50, that's why we've never been in the public eye. We're at number 41 there now. Meanwhile, we have graduated. As a result, no one counts us amongst the poorest countries any more. Those who used to make negative comments about us now do not."

The Finance Minister further said that in the last 10 years before the Corona infection situation, the country has progressed at an extraordinary pace.

"From 1960 to 1990, four Asian tigers (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) were marked for 30 years. They have achieved GDP growth in 6, 7 or 8. But we have gone to 6, 7 or 8 in the same sequence. It makes me believe that if we stay another five years, we will be able to become the fifth Asian Tiger. Everyone has been harmed in Corona, we have also been harmed. Hopefully, the comments that the whole world makes about us, we will be the Asian Tiger."
