Dhaka, August 30: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina firmly said that Bangladesh will never fall into a situation like Sri Lanka from its development course, but will move forward by facing all global challenges. She said, "Remember one thing (to party leaders and workers) that Bangladesh will never be Sri Lanka, it cannot be."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this in her speech as the chief guest at the commemoration meeting organized at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center on the occasion of National Mourning Day on August 15 at the initiative of Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Awami League.

She said, "Today some people are equating Bangladesh with Sri Lanka. I want to tell you something, since you are our leaders and workers, you have to listen and respond to this. You should remember one thing - Bangladesh will never be Sri Lanka, it cannot be."

As the reason, she said, "At that time (BNP rule), the country became the champion of corruption five times, rising commodity prices, crying for electricity and water, lack of employment for people, militancy-terrorism, grenade attacks on 21 August, bomb attacks across the country, assassination of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibiriya. Grenade attacks in various places including murder. And then people were forced to take to the streets in protest. So I was able to rescue Bangladesh from that position of Sri Lanka. So why today's Bangladesh will be Sri Lanka?"

She said, "The government is moving forward with well-planned steps to ensure that our economic dynamism continues and our country can move forward economically."

Pointing out that her government takes and implements development plans considering the overall development of the country, she said, "Sheikh Hasina does not take any project thinking that if she takes up a huge development project, she will get a huge commission later."

Dhaka South Metropolitan Awami League President Freedom Fighter Abu Ahmed Mannafi presided over the discussion and Dhaka North Awami League General Secretary SM Mannan Kochi moderated the discussion. Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, Dhaka North Metropolitan Awami League President Sheikh Bajlur Rahman, Dhaka South Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Humayun Kabir, North Awami League Vice President Sadek Khan also spoke on the occasion.
