Bangladeshis imprisoned in Pakistan return home

Dhaka, December 25, 2020: Eight Bangladeshis have returned home after spending a year and a half in the Landy Jail in Karachi, Pakistan.

They arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday (December 24) night on an Emirates Airlines flight. In the meantime, they have all reached the village house. The relatives of the Bangladeshis returning to the country have given this information. All of them live in Hatiya, Noakhali.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, about a year and a half ago, while fishing in the sea between Oman and Pakistan, the Pakistan Coast Guard detained them after their engine broke down and they entered Pakistani waters due to the current. The detained Bangladeshi national was staying in Oman with a valid labor visa. A year ago, a Pakistani court ruled that there was no impediment to their release, but they were not released. Later, they returned to the country on Thursday with the help of the Foreign Ministry.

They are, Nabir Uddin, Yusuf Uddin, Md. Shahraj, Abul Kashem, Md. Shahed, Md. Khan Saab, Md. Sharif and Mohammad Delwar Hossain.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the six Bangladeshis were repatriated through constant communication with the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Karachi, the Ministry of Home Affairs in Sindh Province, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan and the Mali authorities. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society co-operate in the repatriation process.
