Barkat-Rubel's trial in arms case begins

Dhaka, October 12: The trial of the arms case beagn after charges were framed against Sajjad Hossain Barkat, the ousted general secretary of the Awami League, and Imtiaz Hasan Rubel, the ousted president of the Faridpur Press Club, over their involvement in the much-discussed and controversial political activities in Faridpur.

Sunday (October 11) at 11 a.m. they were produced in District and Sessions Judge Md. Selim Mia's court to frame charges in two separate cases filed under the Arms Act.

Dulal Sarkar, a government counsel in the District and Sessions Judge's Court, said they were produced in court to frame charges in two cases filed under Section 19A / 21/23 of the Arms Act.

The accused in case 13/20 are Sajjad Hossain Barkat and Imtiaz Hasan Rubel.

Besides, Imtiaz Hasan Rubel and his accomplice Rezaul Karim Bipul are accused in another case number 14/20.

The government counsel further said that according to the rules, the accused were asked to read the allegations and find out whether they were guilty or innocent. In response, they demanded justice by claiming their innocence.

The court fixed October 27 for hearing the case and November 2 for the case No. 14/20.

Habibur Rahman, advocate for the defendants in the case, said the court had framed charges against them under Sections 19 A and F of the Special Tribunal Case 13 and 14, as well as Sections 21 and 23 at the same time.

"When we applied for exemption from the case, the court rejected it," he said.

Incidentally, Barkat and Rubel were arrested along with 9 accomplices from Badarpur on the night of June 7.

During this time, seven weapons including cash, drugs and various items including magazines and bullets were seized from them.

The next day, on June 8, Kotwali police SI Sakhawat Hossain and SI Abdul Jabbar filed two separate cases against them under the Arms Act.

Chargesheets were filed in the court on June 26 and 30 after the investigation of the two cases.

Besides, a total of 11 cases were filed against them for various crimes.
