Dhaka, June 3: Following a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Momen at the State Guest House Padma on Wednesday, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Rauf Mazao told reporters that the Bhasanchar shelter is much better than the Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar.

"The Bangladesh government has made an important investment in Bhasan Char by developing the housing facility. If you compare with Cox's Bazar refugee camps, the housing facilities are much better in Bhasan Char," UN Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees (protection) Rouf Mazou, who visited the island in Noakhali on May 31, was quoted as saying by Daily Star.

"What needs to be done now for us and the rest of the international community is to support the government and make sure those who are in Bhasan char and those who will be coming there can live in dignity," he said.

On May 31, Rauf and Assistant UN High Commissioner for Security Gillian Triggs visited Bhasanchar.

About seven lakhs Rohingyas took refuge in Bangladesh after crossing the border on August 25, 2017 in the face of killing and torture in Myanmar. Before that a few more lakhs had already escaped to Bangladesh.

At present, the number of Rohingyas registered in 34 asylum camps in Ukhia and Teknaf is 1.1 million. Initiatives are underway to move 1 lakh Rohingyas to Bhashanchar. About 20,000 Rohingyas have been relocated to Bhasanchar since December last year.
