BNP leaders Fakhrul and Abbas not granted interim bail

Dhaka, December 22: The court rejected the interim bail application of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and member of the party's Standing Committee Mirza Abbas in the case filed at Paltan police station on charges of planning and inciting attacks on the police.

On Wednesday (December 21), their lawyers applied for bail in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Asaduzzaman. After the hearing, the judge rejected their bail application. Syed Zainul Abedin Mesbah applied for bail on behalf of the accused. He was assisted by lawyers Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed Ripon and Zakir Hossain Jewel.

Last Thursday (December 15), Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain rejected the bail application of the accused after the hearing. Earlier, on December 12, the court denied bail to 224 activists including Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas.

DB Police arrested Fakhrul and Abbas from their homes on the night of December 8. The next day on December 9, the police produced them in court. Meanwhile, investigating officer Police Inspector Tariqul Islam requested to keep the arrested BNP leaders in jail until the investigation of the case is over. On the other hand, the defense lawyers applied for bail. After the hearing of both parties, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim rejected the bail application and ordered to send them to jail.

BNP leaders and activists clashed with the police in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on the afternoon of December 7. One person was shot and killed. Many were injured. The police claimed to have found rice and pulses, water, cash and explosives in the BNP office.

A case was filed against 1,500 to 2,000 unidentified BNP leaders and activists including 473 names in the clash. Paltan Model Police Station of the capital filed this case as the plaintiff.
