BNP's campaign not to pay tax-utility bills is anti-state: DMP

Dhaka, Jan 1: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Detective) Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) Mohammad Harun Or Rashid has claimed that BNP is using daily laborers for sabotage in the name of vote boycott programme.

He said these to reporters at his office on Minto Road on Sunday afternoon.

He said, what BNP is doing in the name of boycott program is anti-national, anti-state. The leaflets they are distributing are asking the government to stop paying all kinds of taxes, utility bills. On the one hand, they are trying to disrupt the election. On the other hand, they are doing sabotage. Their propaganda is anti-constitutional, anti-state and anti-democratic. Dhaka Metropolitan Police is determined to stop this effort.

On the night of December 28, 11 people were arrested, including Dhaka University Student Dal President Khorshed Alam Sohel (32) and the joint convener of Krishak Dal Mehdi Hasan Palash (43). A case was filed at Newmarket police station in the capital. While investigating the case, four more people were arrested in a series of raids in West Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur areas on Saturday (December 30) night. During the operation of multiple teams of DB Ramna and Lalbagh Division, two thousand leaflets were recovered from their custody, calling for boycott of elections, payment of all types of taxes, service tax.

Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) of DMP Mohammad Haroon Or Rashid said that 11 people arrested along with 10,000 anti-election leaflets, gunpowder and cocktails were booked under multiple sections of the Special Powers Act and Explosives Act at Newmarket Police Station. Nazmul Huda alias Rakir (26), Russell Mia (27), Nahid Hossain (33) and Bikash Kumar Sheel (28) were arrested in West Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur areas.

Among them Nazmul Huda Rakib Chhatra Dal Tejgaon College Branch joint general secretary, Russell and Nahid construction workers and Jubo Dal workers. Bikash Kumar Sheel works in a printing shop. Leaflets calling for refraining from paying taxes, services, taxes have been printed at a shop named 'Design Room' in West Dhanmondi. Printing machine, photocopy machine and printer were seized from that shop.
