Dhaka, April 11: The water level of Jamuna, Karatoya, Baral and Hurasagar rivers has risen due to the hill slope coming down from the upper reaches, causing flash floods in different parts of Sirajganj. As a result, a large amount of boro paddy land in the riverine areas of different upazilas has been submerged.

About 500 bighas of raw and semi-ripe paddy in the low lying areas of Sirajganj Sadar, Kazipur and Chauhali char areas have been submerged. The helpless farmers are being forced to cut raw or semi-ripe paddy and feed it to cows and goats. Boro paddy of more than 250 bighas of land along the river banks of Shahjadpur Municipality and 13 unions has been submerged. Water has also infiltrated the land in the low lying areas of Kaijuri, Sonatani, Gala and Jalalpur Union.

Besides, due to the increase in water, sesame, almond and kauni fields along the river have been submerged and farmers have suffered huge losses. The aggrieved farmers of Sonatani Union said that at least 115 bighas of paddy in our area has been submerged due to sudden rise in river water.

With this paddy the farmers meet the food demand for half of the year. Now they are extremely worried about the sinking of paddy. They have sought the cooperation of the government to overcome this loss.

The low lands near Ghat Bridge of Chuniakhalipara and Shahjadpur police stations can be seen. As the whole area was submerged, there was a rush to cut paddy.

Sirajganj Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director (Acting) AJM Ahsan Shahid Sarkar said about 750 bighas of boro paddy in four upazilas of the district surrounded by rivers have been submerged due to sudden rise in water in Jamuna. This has caused a lot of damage to the farmers. However, the extent of the damage has not yet been determined.
