Dhaka, December 29: Elder brother of former Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Narendra Kumar Sinha, and nephew Shankhajit Sinha testified in court against him in a case of embezzlement of loan money from Farmers Bank (now Padma Bank).

They both said that an account has been opened in their name at the Uttara branch of Shahjalal Islami Bank in the name of SK Sinha. Later, they did not know about the transfer of Tk. 2.5 crore.

Narendra Kumar Sinha, 70, is the elder brother of the former chief justice. And Shankhajit Sinha is the son of Justice Sinha's cousin. They testified in the court of Dhaka Special Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam No. 4 on Monday.

One of the accused in the case during the testimony of the former chairman of the audit committee of Farmers Bank Limited. Mahbubul Haque Chishti (Babul Chishti) fell ill and was taken to the nearby National Medical College Hospital. Later he was sent to jail from there.

After leaving the country on leave in early October 2017, the then Chief Justice SK Sinha sent his resignation letter from abroad. The trial of this case is going on by showing him as a fugitive.

In his testimony in court, his brother Narendra said he worked as the chief light keeper of the Department of Shipping under the Ministry of Shipping. He retired from government service in January 2005.

She and her nephew Shankhajit have a joint account at Shahjalal Islami Bank's Uttara branch. Of the Tk 4 crore loan allegedly embezzled against Surendra Kumar Sinha, Tk 2 crore 23 lakh 59 thousand was transferred as the joint venture between Narendra and Shankhajit.

Narendra told the court that his brother SK Sinha told him one day that he needed to open a bank account for special needs, but that was not possible for him as he was in government service. That is why, at the 'request' of SK Sinha, Narendra signed some documents of Shahjalal Islami Bank, Narendra told the court.

He said in his deposition that he never went to the bank and did not sign any check. He had no business relationship with Shankhajit. He has no idea about the money deposited in the joint account from SK Sinha's account at the Supreme Court branch of Sonali Bank.
