Brunei has the second highest human development index among Southeast Asian countries after Singapore. It is one of the most developed countries in the world. About 90 percent of the country's GDP comes from crude oil and natural gas production. Brunei produces about 1,67,000 barrels of oil per day. Brunei is one of the oil-producing countries in Southeast Asia.

Moreover, the country produces about 25.3 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas per day. Brunei is the ninth largest gas exporter in the world.

Forbes ranks Brunei as the fifth richest country out of 182 based on the petroleum and natural gas sectors.

A country's income from foreign investment complements its domestic production income. Most of these investments are made by the Brunei Investment Agency and a branch of the Ministry of Finance. The country's government provides all kinds of medical care to its citizens, subsidizing rice and housing.

Royal Brunei Airlines is trying to make the country a hub for international travel between Europe and Australia-New Zealand. The airline also has services to major Asian destinations including Shanghai, Bangkok, Singapore, and Manila.

Brunei relies heavily on imports from other countries in terms of agricultural products (such as rice, food products, livestock, etc.), vehicles, and electrical products. Brunei imports 60 percent of its food. About 75 percent of this comes from other ASEAN countries.
