Cabinet approves Bangladesh-Bhutan trade agreement
Dhaka, January 11: Bangladesh has signed a bilateral trade agreement with Bhutan, which has been ratified by the cabinet. The approval was given at a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (January 11).
Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said this at a press briefing at the secretariat after the meeting.
The Cabinet Secretary said, "The preferential trade agreement signed between Bangladesh and Bhutan has been approved by the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Royal Government of Bhutan and its corresponding Rule for Determination of Goods for Bangladesh."
"A bilateral agreement was signed between Bangladesh and Bhutan on December 6 at the level of commerce minister. Article 22 of the agreement states that the agreement will be implemented through diplomatic relations between the two countries to facilitate duty-free import and export of certain products. It was brought to the cabinet. The cabinet approved it. "
"Besides, it is suggested to look into whether such trade agreements can be made with the neighboring countries, through which trade will be facilitated."
He said, "Since 2010, Bhutan has been providing duty-free access to 18 products and Bhutan to Bangladesh for 92 products. As a result of the new agreement, Bhutan will get 18 more products and Bangladesh 10 more products."
"That is why the Cabinet has asked for more Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) or FTAs so that trade can be further expanded," he said.
