Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 15: After retirement, the Chief Justice will get a special allowance of Rs 70,000 per month for various services including house assistant, driver and doorman. With such a provision, the Cabinet has given final approval to the draft of ‘Judges of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh (Leave, Pension and Privileges) Act, 2022’.

The approval was given at a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (March 14). The Prime Minister from Ganobhaban and Ministers from the Cabinet Division of the Secretariat attended the meeting via video conference.

The cabinet secretary said it was an ordinance. Now it is being turned into law. This will include the pensionable tenure, i.e. the actual tenure and full pay for each leave period of 30 days or the amount of leave actually taken whichever is less.

The Cabinet Secretary said that if a justice is injured or killed in a violent incident, the provisions applicable to the employees engaged in the work of the Republic in this regard will be applicable with necessary changes in the case of that justice. And when a justice retires, he / she will get 18 months leave in cash subject to leave.

When asked what is new in the draft law, Khandaker Anwarul Islam said, "There is one -- A retired Chief Justice will receive a special retirement allowance of Rs. 70,000."

The cabinet also discussed about providing state security to the retired Chief Justice for a certain period. If the government thinks it can pay them with an executive order, it cannot be brought into law. Because the law of any other country does not specify how long the retired Chief Justice should be given security after retirement. That is why the government thinks that if there is sensitivity in the case of someone, the government will give him security for a certain period of time by issuing an executive order.
