College student stabbed to death for rejecting marriage proposal

Dhaka, May 10: An imam named Md. Saidul Islam (30) has been accused of stabbing a college girl to death with a sharp weapon because she did not agree to a marriage proposal in Gazipur, near the capital. The incident took place in South Salna area of the metropolis on Monday night. The college student's mother and sister were injured in the attack.

The name of the deceased college student is Rabeya Akhter (23). She is the daughter of Abdur Rauf of South Salna area of Gazipur metropolis. In this incident, his mother Bilkis Begum and younger sister Khadija were admitted to a hospital in Dhaka with serious injuries.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gazipur Sadar Metro Police Station Ziaul Haque said that Abdur Rauf lives in that area with his wife and four daughters. Eldest daughter Rabeya Akhtar passed HSC examination in 2020 from Joydevpur Government Women's College with GPA-5. After that he started processing visas and ancillary activities to study in Europe. He entrusted his two younger daughters, Khadija and Jannat, to Imam Md. Saidul Islam of the local Tekibari Jame Masjid for Quran education.

Rabeya falls in love with Akhtar as she goes home to teach them. A few days later he proposed marriage to Rabia, but the proposal was directly rejected. At one point he was forbidden to come home. He got angry at this and harassed Rabia in various ways.

On Monday around 7:30 pm, Rabeya Akhtarke Kopa went home. When his mother and sister came forward, Saidul Islam cut them and injured them and ran away. Later locals rescued them and took them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. Rabeya Akhter died around 8:30 pm. The seriously injured mother and younger sister were sent to Dhaka. In this incident, the victim's father filed a case against Saidul Islam as the plaintiff. Police are conducting operations to nab the accused.
