Comilla violence: Iqbal Hossain confesses to keeping Quran inside Hindu Durga Puja marquee

Dhaka, October 23: Iqbal Hossain has admitted to keeping the Holy Quran inside the puja marquee in Comilla. The accused was brought to the Comilla Police Line around 12:30 pm on Friday (October 22), where he admitted his crime during a preliminary interrogation.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Iqbal also admitted to removing the mace from Hanuman's idol after placing the Holy Quran in the Darpan Sangha's marquee at Nanua Dighirpar in the city. However, he did not say on whose instructions the work was carried out.

Earlier, police arrested Iqbal from Sugandha Point in Cox's Bazar beach area around 10:30 pm on Thursday (October 21). On receiving the news, a police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Sohan Sarkar left Comilla at night.

On October 13, a marquee was attacked and vandalized at the Dighirpar in Comilla's Nanua. In this incident, 791 people were accused in nine cases, filed at different police stations of Comilla. Of these, five cases have been registered in Kotwali Model Police Station, two in Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station and one each in Daudkandi and Debidwar Police Stations. Mentioning the names of 91 people, 700 unidentified persons have been accused in the case. So far, 44 people have been arrested by the law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement identified Iqbal by collecting CCTV camera footage from several areas of the city, including the vicinity of the mandapa.
