Comilla violence: Prime accused Iqbal Hossain produced in court

Dhaka, October 23: The main accused in the Comilla violence Iqbal Hossain has been produced in court for keeping the Holy Quran Sharif in a Hindu Durga Puja marquee on the bank of Nanua Dighi. He was taken to Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Mithila Jahan Nipar's court at 11:55 am on Saturday (October 23). Law enforcement has tightened security at the court premises.

Earlier, Iqbal Hossain admitted to keeping the Holy Quran in the puja marquee. He was brought to the Comilla Police Lines around 12:30 pm on Friday (October 22) and admitted the incident during preliminary interrogation.

Police arrested Iqbal from Sugandha Point in Cox's Bazar beach area around 10:30 pm on Thursday (October 21). On receiving the news, a police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Sohan Sarkar left Comilla at night. He was brought to the Comilla Police Line on Friday afternoon and initially interrogated extensively.

On October 13, a marquee was attacked and vandalized at the Dighirpar in Comilla's Nanua. In this incident, 791 people were accused in nine cases, filed at different police stations of Comilla. Of these, five cases have been registered in Kotwali Model Police Station, two in Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station and one each in Daudkandi and Debidwar Police Stations. Mentioning the names of 91 people, 700 unidentified persons have been accused in the case. So far, 44 people have been arrested by the law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement identified Iqbal by collecting CCTV camera footage from several areas of the city, including the vicinity of the mandapa.
