Dhaka, Sept 14: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that he is confident of the government's commitment to a fair election. He said this in a discussion with dignitaries at the election building on Wednesday.

The CEC said the political leadership should create a favorable environment to resolve the crisis. The government is also promising fair elections.

He said, "We are very confident that the government, including the Prime Minister, is saying that they want the next election to be fair. But the government has never made this promise before. This is the first time the government has promised this. Law Minister, Information Minister, Communications Minister have used the word 'Government'. The Prime Minister has clearly said several times - the government is giving assurances in the next elections. I would say trust."

CEC Kazi Habibul Awal said whether the election will be good or not depends on the cooperation of political leaders.

He said, "We are in a difficult situation. It's not an election. Not going to vote in Australia. There is a crisis - you said, we also understand. Political leaders have to resolve that crisis. I have said this repeatedly - if the politicians do not create a favorable environment for us, then it will be difficult for us to get elected. And if the environment is favorable then the work will be easy."

Pointing out that 'government' and 'party' are always confused, the CEC said, the division should be understood. Government and party are different things. There is no word in the constitution for government party. I may say it verbally. Whenever a government is formed, it represents all the parties, all the people, the whole country.

Bringing up the subject of reconciliation, the Chief Election Commissioner said, "We have repeatedly talked about reconciliation. You sit at the tea table. But the political culture has become such that no one wants to sit with anyone. EC does not solve this problem. It has to be done in a domestic manner (solution). But sadly I don't see that kind of civil society."
