Dhaka, December 3: For the first time in the country, two children (Nuha and Naba) who are joined at the spine (conjoined twins), are being surgically separated. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Hossain, Professor of Department of Neurosurgery and Dean of Faculty of Surgery, will lead this complex and sensitive surgery at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). In this case, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has borne the medical expenses of two children.

BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed informed the journalists after the meeting of the medical board formed for the treatment of the two children on Thursday (December 1).

He said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is enquiring about Nuha and Naba all the time. She is bearing all the medical expenses of the two children and has ordered to take appropriate medical measures. We will try our best to implement those instructions."

Dr. Mohammad Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Surgery and Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery, said, "The treatment process of the two children is very complicated and time-consuming. They will be operated in several stages. Neurosurgeons, urologists, pediatric surgeons, burn and plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatric nutritionists, etc. Doctors from different departments will be needed."

Dr. Samanta Lal Sen, chief coordinator of Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, said, "I came to the medical board on the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and invited the vice-chancellor of BSMMU and saw the case studies of the two children. I realized that their operation is very complicated and time-consuming. It needs to be done step by step."

Children Nuha and Naba, aged 8 months and 13 days, were admitted in BSMMU neuro surgery department under professor Dr. Mohammad Hossain. These twins were born to transport worker Alamgir Rana and his wife Nasreen of Kathalbari in Kurigram district. Their arms and legs are independent but their spines are attached.
