Dhaka, June 12: Indian delta variant of coronavirus have spread in Rajshahi even before the lockdown started. Not only in Rajshahi, but also in the outlying areas. As a result, as the number of patients in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital has increased, so has the death rate.

Meanwhile, the lockdown was scheduled to start in Rajshahi city from 5 pm on Friday (June 11) as announced by the administration. But even before that, the activities of law enforcement and local administration have been seen.

However, Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani, director of Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital, told reporters that the Indian Delta variant of the coronavirus had spread in Rajshahi before the lockdown was announced. At the same time, he spoke of implementing a strict lockdown.

However, considering the overall issues, including seasonal fruits and livelihood of Rajshahi region, the local administration gave special restrictions instead of strict lockdown. But nothing worked. The death and identification rates of coronavirus patients at RMC Hospital have doubled.

"The situation is still not out of control. But everyone needs to be more careful. There is no alternative. The public must abide by the rules of hygiene. Stakeholders need to cooperate to implement the lockdown. So that the detection and mortality rate is reduced. Now that the Indian Delta variant has spread, it is pretty much certain. So it is necessary to extend the lockdown for another week and implement it strictly," said Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani.

Shamim Yazdani further said that the Indian Delta variant is very scary. It is attacking the elderly more. It is rapidly worsening the patient's physical condition. Doctors in the ICU are doing round-the-clock monitoring; Even then it is seen that the physical condition is deteriorating rapidly.

"I can't say for sure how many people are affected by the Indian Delta variant. Why don't we have a system to test it. However, a few days ago, samples from Chapainawabganj were tested and it was reported from Dhaka that about 80 percent of the Indian delta variants. It has spread to the village level. It remains to be seen how far it will go," he added.

Padma and Mahananda rivers connect with Indian rivers at Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj. People there have stopped eating river fish for fear of contracting the Indian Delta variant.

In this regard, Shamim Yazdani said, "No research has been done on whether the Indian Delta variant is spreading through river water. I don't know if this is possible."
