Dhaka, April 6: The Mohakhali Market of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) used as a coronavirus isolation center will be turned into DNCC Dedicated Corona Hospital for the treatment of Covid patients. The 1,000-bed hospital will have 100 ICU beds and 112 HDUs. This will be the largest hospital for corona treatment.

According to the Ministry of Health, the implementation of the hospital has already started. Services will begin here in mid-April. The hospital will be fully operational by the end of this month.

It will be managed by the Bangladesh Armed Forces. However, the Ministry of Health will assist in the operation of the hospital with 500 doctors, 700 nurses and 700 staff and medicines and equipment.

Today (Tuesday) the director of the hospital Brigadier General AKM Nasir Uddin said, "Hopefully we will be able to open 250 beds and some ICU beds by mid-April. The hospital will be fully operational by the end of the month. Only coronavirus patients will be treated here. No operation will be performed. If anyone needs an operation, he will be taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital."

Until now, the 1,80,560-square-foot market was used as a Covid isolation center and as a corona testing lab for expatriates. Asked how those services would be provided now that the facility is being run as a hospital, Nasir Uddin said, "They will not be closed. There will be a separate place for foreigners."

During a visit on August 9 last year, DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam announced the transformation of the Mohakhali market into a 500-bed urban (city) hospital.

On that day, he said, "The DNCC market on 7.17 acres of land was originally set up for wholesale raw material market but could not be implemented due to various reasons. Now we are planning how to convert it into an urban hospital. If we convert this building into an urban hospital. If we can, then there will be many benefits for the people of the city."
