Covid-19 deaths decrease in Khulna division, Barisal witnesses surge

Dhaka, August 2: In the last 24 hours, between Sunday and Monday morning, Khulna has reported 26 Covid-19 deaths and 1,373 fresh cases, while Barisal has witnessed a surge with 31 fatalities- the highest single-day death toll in the division, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

On Sunday, Khulna division reported 40 deaths and 880 fresh Covid-19 cases.

According to the DGHS, Khulna and Kustia districts recorded seven deaths each, Jessore and Meherpur accounted for three fatalities each, Magura and Jhenaidah two each, while one each died in Bagerhat and Chuadanga.

In Barisal, 798 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate was 36.86 percent.

Dr Saiful Islam, director of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said 23 people had died in the hospital's coronavirus unit. Of these, five were infected with coronavirus and the remaining 18 were undergoing treatment with symptoms. The hospital's coronavirus unit treated 311 people until 8 am on Monday. Of these, 114 are infected with coronavirus.

He said that 188 samples were tested in the hospital's RT-PCR lab, of which 105 returned positive results. The positivity rate was 55.85 percent.

Dr. Basudeb Kumar Das, Divisional Director of the DGHS in Barisal, said that 798 cases of coronavirus have been detected across the division from 2,165 samples. The positivity rate was 36.86 percent. The highest rate of infection in the last 24 hours was in Barisal district. The detection rate in this district stood at 43.38 percent.

In Barisal, 282 people tested positive from 650 samples. Bhola district's infection rate stood at 39.70 percent with 160 people returning positive results from 403 samples.

In Barguna, 83 people tested positive from 241 samples. The detection rate was 34.44 percent.
