Dhaka, June 29: No pillion rider will be allowed on motorcycles across the capital, as a measure to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Iftekhairul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the DMP Media and Public Relations Department, said on Monday (June 26th) night that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had discouraged other riders from accompanying the driver.

"Recently, it has been noticed that people familiar with the motorcyclist in the lockdown are sharing the ride or some are sharing the ride for professional reasons. As a result the same used helmet is being used repeatedly by different people. This increases the risk of corona infection," the DMP warned.

In this situation, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has discouraged motorcyclists from riding along with the driver in the capital in case of emergency considering the current situation during this upward transmission of the second wave of corona. Rickshaws are being requested in compliance with the hygiene rules.

The government has issued a circular announcing a limited lockdown from June 28 to July 1 from 6 am onwards to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The directive has also stated five conditions. They are: -

1. All public transport, except freight vehicles and rickshaws, will be closed across the country. Law enforcement needs to ensure the matter through regular patrols.

2. All shopping malls, markets, tourist centers, resorts, community centers and entertainment centers will be closed.

3. Food stalls, hotels and restaurants will be able to sell food (online / takeaway only) from 8 am to 8 pm.

4. Government-private offices / institutions have to bring in and take only the required number of officers and employees in the management of their respective offices.

5. Authorities have to run more awareness campaigns for the citizens pertaining to mask usage and should take legal action if necessary.
