Dhaka, 18 September 2022 : Two new sub-variants of omicron type of coronavirus have been identified in Dhaka, International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) said.

The organization said that these two new subtypes are responsible for the upward trend of corona infection in the last few days. This information was reported on Saturday (September 17) on the website of ICDDR, B. These data have been revealed by monitoring the samples of new victims.

According to ICDDR, 38 genomes have been sequenced from July 23 to September 9 to determine the nature of the corona infection. It found the presence of two new sub-variants of Omicron in the capital Dhaka. Among the omicron variants in the genome sequence, 26 omicron BA.5 and 12 omicron BA.2 sub-variants were found.

According to the information provided on the website, initially the BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron was the most prevalent across the country including the capital. But in the last three weeks it has shifted from BA.5 to BA.2, which is a big change. At the same time two new sub-variants were found BA.2.75 (H=6) and BJ.1 (H=1) (which originally originated from BA.2).

Meanwhile, the same picture emerged in a report by the Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives (IDESHI). They identified both Omicron BA.2.75 and BJ.1 subtypes in Dhaka city.
