Criminal procedure becoming up-to-date and modern

Dhaka, October 26: The Criminal Procedure Code of 1897 is being formulated in a timely, modern and in the Bengali language. To this end, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq has constituted a committee to examine the necessary amendments, additions, refinements and modernization of the Criminal Procedure Code.

On Monday (October 25), the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department ordered the formation of the committee.

In a cabinet meeting held on October 19, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave the directive to the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister. In view of this, the Law Minister constituted a nine-member committee with the Secretary of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department Md. Moinul Kabir as the Chairperson and the Secretary of the Law and Justice Department Md. Golam Sarwar as the Co-Chairperson.

Other members of the committee are: Additional Secretary Hafiz Ahmed Chowdhury, Joint Secretaries Bikash Kumar Saha and Kazi Arifuzzaman, Deputy Secretary Sheikh Golam Mahbub, Joint Secretary (current duties) Mohammad Asaduzzaman Nur, Deputy Secretary Gazi Kalimullah and Joint Secretary (current duties) Md. Muniruzzaman.

The terms of reference of the committee will be: -

To provide necessary amendments, additions, refinements and corrections and researches in the Criminal Procedure Code and make necessary recommendations on its up-to-date and modernization;

Provide necessary recommendations for the formulation of Criminal Procedure Code in Bengali;

To make necessary investigative recommendations on the problems that are currently arising in the application of the Criminal Procedure Code for speedy disposal of criminal cases;

Reviewing and recommending criminal law and related laws in other parts of the world; and

The Committee may, if necessary, co-opt one or more members into the Committee.

The committee will submit a report to Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque as soon as possible with recommendations for review.
