Crossing a critical juncture in national life: President in Parliament

Dhaka, Jan 6: President Md. Abdul Hamid said, we are crossing an important juncture in national life. 2022 was a challenging year for us. The whole world is going through this difficult time.

He said this in his speech at the first session of the National Parliament on Thursday (January 5).

According to the constitution, the President addresses the first session of the year. During this, the President detailed the developmental activities of the present government. However, he gave a brief speech in Parliament. The speaker considers the remainder of his speech as read. Before this, the session of Parliament started under the chairmanship of Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury.

The President said that we have been able to maintain economic momentum by successfully dealing with the Corona pandemic, but the Russia-Ukraine war has slowed down our progress. Still, compared to the revised budget of the fiscal year 2021-22, the budget in the fiscal year 2022-23 has increased by 14 percent to Tk 6 lakh 78 thousand 64 crore.

Abdul Hamid said, it is our duty to present a safe, happy, beautiful and prosperous Bangladesh to the new generation. The Bengali nation should work more unitedly with the goal of establishing an exploitation-free society by completely eradicating corruption, terrorism, drugs and militancy. To speed up the progress of the country, let the nation move forward in the path of building a prosperous 'Golden Bangla' of Bangabandhu, free from hunger and poverty, by holding the spirit of the liberation war and the ideals of the father of the nation.

He said that the GDP growth for the fiscal year 2021-22 stood at 7.2-5 percent, which is positive considering the overall global economic situation. Per capita national income increased by 233 US dollars from the previous fiscal year to USD 2824. Compared to the previous financial year, the export earnings in 2021-22 increased by 60.97 billion dollars and the amount of foreign investment stood at 3.44 billion dollars.

Before this, at 3 pm, a meeting of the working advisory committee was held under the chairmanship of the speaker. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, opposition leaders and members of the committee were present in it.

At the beginning of the session, the speaker nominated the presidium. They are Ramesh Chandra Sen (Thakurgaon-1), AKM Shajahan Kamal (Laxmipur-3), Yusuf Abdullah Haroon (Comilla-3), Kazi Feroz Rashid (Dhaka-6) and Salma Chowdhury (Women's seat-34). They will preside over the session of the Parliament in the absence of the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker.
