Dhaka, May 10: Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said, "On Eid, homebound people are traveling from one district to another, including ferry crossings, taking advantage of the slight easing of restrictions. No one cares about hygiene. It's like committing suicide."

He was speaking as the chief guest at an emergency exchange meeting on Monday (May 10th) at noon with departmental level officials from four border areas of the country on "what to do to tackle the new Indian variant". The health minister joined the virtual meeting.

Zahid Maleque said, "Thousands of people are dying every day in our neighboring country India due to new variants. New Indian variants have now spread to Nepal. Terrible situation has arisen there. This variant has now spread to our country. If it goes to the village, the villagers, including the families in the village, may be affected en masse. "

"Even in urban areas, people are now moving recklessly. In the capital Dhaka and other big divisional cities of the country, people are moving in crowded vehicles including shopping malls. No one is following the hygiene rules," he said.

The health minister said, "If this continues, the country may face dire situation like India and Nepal after Eid. Therefore, the concerned officials in charge of each border area will have to work hard. All the families of the person traveling to India in the border area will have to undergo speedy and compulsory sample test."

"Emergency measures must be taken to ensure that no vehicles in the area can move outside their districts. Considering the security of the country, the concerned officials have to take a tougher decision if necessary."

During the virtual meeting, the health minister wanted to know the list of people who have traveled to India in the last 15 days in the border areas. The Minister also directed to conduct Covid test on a large scale in the border area. India instructed to bring all the families of the travelers under compulsory examination.
