Dhaka, July 7: Dhaka Custom House has seized 18 cows of American Brahman breed imported from the United States. The cows arrived at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday (July 5) at noon on a Turkish Airlines flight. Mohammad Abdus Sadeq, Deputy Commissioner (Preventive) of Dhaka Customs House, said that these were confiscated as there was no permission to import the Brahman breed cows in Bangladesh and the importer of cattle was not available.

According to the source, the price of all the cows in the bill of entry has been fixed at USD 40,000 (Tk 33,97,738). However, customs officials estimate that the value of each of the cows is more than Tk 12-15 lakh.

The name of the importer of these cows aged 13 to 60 months is 'Sadeq Agro' of Mohammadpur. However, no one came to pick up the cows at Shahjalal Airport.

Imported goods or cargo will be kept in the warehouse of the general airport. However, the cows have been temporarily handed over to the Livestock Department as there is no provision for keeping any animals there.

In this context, Mohammad Abdus Sadeq said, "Although the cows were imported from the United States, no one came to pick them up at the airport. Import of Brahma breed cows is banned in Bangladesh. It has been confiscated for this reason. However, as there is no system to keep cows in our custody, they are being handed over to the Department of Livestock."

He said the cows would be sold at auction if no claimant was found.

Meanwhile, an official of the Livestock Department came to the airport and confirmed that the imported cows were of Brahman breed.
