Dhaka, May 24: When the powerful cyclone 'Bulbul' hit in November 2019, the Sundarbans saved Bangladesh. This mangrove forest protected us from casualties and damage. However, it caused extensive damage to the Sundarbans. Now the Sundarbans can stand up to protect Bangladesh from the cyclone 'Yaas' that is about to form in the Bay of Bengal.

Meteorologist Abdur Rahman said, "The forecast we have so far is that if the depression turns into a cyclone, it could start hitting between noon and evening on Wednesday (May 26)."

"So far, the cyclone is likely to hit Orissa, West Bengal in India and western Bangladesh," he said. "It could also have an impact on Bangladesh's Sundarbans."

In its latest special notification on cyclones, the Meteorological Department said that the apparent light pressure in the East-Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas has intensified and turned into low pressure in the same area. It may further condense into a deep depression and subsequently turn into a cyclone and move northwest.

At 12 noon on Sunday (May 23), the depression was located 700 km south-southwest of Chittagong seaport, 615 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, 710 km south of Mongla seaport and 655 km south of Payra seaport.

Within 44 km of the depression center, the maximum sustained wind speed is 40 km per hour, increasing to 50 km in the form of gusts or gusts of wind. The sea is rough near the center of depression. Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to display remote warning signal number 1.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay and the deep sea have been asked to remain in safe shelter until further notice. At the same time, they have been told not to wander in the deep sea.
