Day-long clashes in the capital: 90 activists detained, 20 police injured

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 29 July 2023: Inspite of the ban, BNP has clashed with the police at the entrance of the capital on Saturday. At this time, 20 policemen including the joint commissioner were injured. Ninety activists of BNP have been arrested in this incident.

Md Farooq Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) of DMP Media and Public Relations Department told these things to reporters at his office on Saturday (July 29) afternoon.

He said that no application has been made by BNP to Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner for today's program. The DMP also informed the media and BNP that today's program was not allowed. Today's assembly was illegal as it was not permitted. BNP leaders and activists stationed themselves at various points in Dhaka city and set fire to cars, stopped cars, threw cocktails and attacked the police.

About 20 policemen were injured in this attack along with DMP's Traffic South Joint Commissioner Mehdi. Rubber bullets were fired at them to prevent them from attacking the police and setting fire to their vehicles. They vandalized 8-10 police vehicles, vandalized and set fire to around 20 public transports. In view of this force is applied on them.

DC Farooq Hossain said that 90 people have been arrested so far. Those who have committed these activities will be regularly prosecuted in the concerned police station.

Meanwhile, BNP activists clashed with the police at Dholaikhal in the capital. Several leaders and activists of the Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal were injured in the firing of police shotguns. Six of them are undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

They are Mohiuddin Rubel (35), Zakirul Islam Alam (38), Ikramul Haque (30), Mehdi Hasan (29), Obaidul Haque (28) and Abdul Aziz Mahmud (26). All of them are under treatment in the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

They were brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 12:30 PM on Monday.

Among the injured are Mohiuddin Rubel (30), vice-president of Jagannath University Chhatra Dal, Zakirul Alam (30), president of Kalabagan Thana Chhatra Dal, Enamul Haque (30), drama affairs secretary of Central Chhatra Dal, Mehdi Hasan Abir (29), joint general secretary of Kavi Nazrul Chhatra Dal, Abdul Aziz. (28) Member Secretary of Rangabali Upazila Chhatra Dal of Patuakhali district and Obaidul Haque (40) Jubo Dal worker.

Earlier, BNP leaders and activists left the road after the clash lasted for about 1 hour at Dholaikhal junction in the capital. BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was arrested from the spot. Later the police took control of the road.
