Dhaka, Dec 6: Today (December 6) is the day of the fall of dictatorship and liberation of democracy. The then dictator fell on this day in 1990 in the face of a popular uprising at the final stage of the nine-year long anti-dictatorship movement.

On this day, the then President Hussain Muhammad Ershad was forced to hand over power to the non-partisan caretaker government as per the outline of the three alliances. Nur Hossain, Salim, Delwar, Tajul, Dr. Milan, Nurul Huda, Babul, Fattah and many others lost their lives in this movement. Various political parties and socio-cultural organizations are celebrating the day today through various programmes.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a message given on the occasion of 'Democracy Day' said that the anti-freedom and anti-democracy circles are still conspiring against democracy and the country in various ways. We will not let the blood of the martyrs in the democratic march go in vain - this is our strong conviction on the day of democracy liberation.

She said, "Let us all strengthen the foundation of democracy by resisting all conspiracies against democracy and the country and work unitedly for the development of the country and the welfare of the people to build a hunger-poverty-free and happy-rich golden Bangladesh."

The Prime Minister said that the Awami League has been struggling for a long time with the aim of restoring democracy, establishing people's vote and fundamental rights, and the people of the country have participated in it spontaneously. As a result of the continued agitation, the dictator surrendered to the mass movement and was forced to resign on December 6 in 1990. In return for the sacrifice of many martyrs, the right to vote was re-established in Bangladesh. Nation will reverently remember the contribution of all martyrs in restoration of democracy.

In her speech, she prayed for forgiveness and peace for the souls of all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for democracy and rights on Democracy Day.
