Dhaka, March 8: At least 18 people were killed and over a hundred people were injured in a massive explosion in a building at Siddique Bazar area in Dhaka's Gulistan on Tuesday evening. It is feared that the death toll may rise.

On Tuesday around 4:50 pm, a major explosion took place at Siddique Bazar near BRTC bus counter in Gulistan. Two multi-storied buildings — one seven-storey and another five-storey — were damaged. The ground floor of the five-story building and the basement, first and second floors of the seven-story building were severely damaged due to the explosion.

The fire service said at least 11 units had reached the scene and carried out rescue operations. More than 100 injured persons were rescued from those two buildings and rushed to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital.

Around 10:45 pm, Dhaka Divisional Deputy Director of Fire Service Dinmoni Sharma said that the rescue operation in the blast-damaged building in Siddiqbazar has been suspended for today.

He said that the buildings have become dangerous due to the explosion. In this condition, it is not possible to carry out search and rescue operations in the basement area of the building. Hence the rescue work has been suspended. When the army arrives on Wednesday morning, then the rescue work will begin.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.
