Dhaka fire: Lawsuit against mansion and chemical godown owner

Dhaka, April 24: Four people have died in a fire at a chemical godown at Haji Musa Mansion in Armanitola, Old Dhaka, and 20 others are undergoing treatment for burns. Police have filed a case against the owner of Haji Musa Mansion building and chemical godown. A case was lodged with the Bangshal Police Station of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) around 8:50 pm on Friday (April 23).

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangshal Police Station Shahin Fakir said the families of the fire victims were asked by the police to file a case but they expressed disinterest in the case.

Even their close relatives could not decide on the case. As four people were killed and the incident caused a stir, the police filed a case at around 8:50 pm. The owner of Haji Musa Manson of Armanitola and the owner of the chemical godown have been accused in the case.

The OC further said that the case was filed due to negligence, death due to personal safety and possession of flammable substances. The amount of damage to chemicals in residential buildings has been much higher.

Meanwhile, officials from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) visited Haji Musa Mansion. They toured the scene and the surrounding area. At the end of the inspection, the company said, the fire may have started from a chemical godown.

PBI Additional Deputy Commissioner Kamrul Islam told reporters that there were several chemical shops on the ground floor of Haji Musa Mansion. Chemicals were sold in these shops. That chemical can start a fire. The fire spread to several shops at the back of the ground floor of the building.

Tanmoy Prakash Ghosh, a resident doctor at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, told reporters at noon that 21 people burnt in a fire at a chemical godown in a six-storey building at Armanitola in Old Dhaka have been admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Three of them, a man and a woman, are in critical condition in the ICU. The remaining 16 were admitted in different wards. One of the patients, Mostafa, has returned with treatment. The respiratory pipe of 20 people were burnt, while two people suffered physical burns.
