Dhaka, January 30: Through the BIMSTEC process, Bangladesh wants to fulfill the dream of regional cooperation of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Foreign Minister. AK Abdul Momen said this. He said Bangabandhu had dreamed of economic and social prosperity of the people of South Asia in 1972 by working with the neighbors of the region.

He made the remarks while welcoming the new Secretary General of BIMSTEC, Tenzin Lekfel, on Thursday (January 28). The Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is an organization of seven countries in South and Southeast Asia dependent on the Bay of Bengal - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

The Foreign Minister said Bangabandhu had expressed his dream of economic and social prosperity of the people of South Asia in 1972 by working with the neighbors of the region. Since then, regional cooperation has been an integral part of Bangladesh's constitution and foreign policy priorities.

Momen said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the worthy daughter of the father of the nation, has attached great importance to the BIMSTEC Forum as a tool of the regional movement, which has been reflected in the establishment of the forum's secretariat in Dhaka. At the direction of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of External Affairs has taken initiative to construct a new multi-storey iconic building of the BIMSTEC Secretariat.

The Foreign Minister emphasized on the implementation of BIMSTEC Master Plan for transport connectivity for the greater good of the region. He said the implementation of BIMSTEC cooperation on a priority basis should be expedited with a view to increasing the benefits for the people of the Bay of Bengal region by making full use of the regional potential.

"The concerned ministries and agencies of Bangladesh are ready to organize necessary meetings and events to strengthen the field of cooperation."

The Foreign Minister further said that connectivity could play an important role in accelerating the pace of economic development in the BIMSTEC region.
